Morphodynamics

The Scheldt estuary varies greatly over her 160 km course. From Ghent to Doel, the Scheldt has a single stream. Over this part the width of the river increases from 50 to 1350 m. Downstream from Doel, the river meanders over a broad bed with a complex multi-stream system consisting of trenches, sandbanks, mudflats and tidal marshes along the banks. In Vlissingen the river is as wide as 5000 m.

In the interest of accessibility, the geomorphology of the estuary is closely monitored. A lot of research is carried out on sediment balance, export vs. import, deposition of sediment, channel development, the influence of sand mining, dredring...
