Abstract
The sustainable development of the Scheldt Estuary based on navigation, environment and safety, was discussed. Policy planning in the Scheldt Estuary was slowed down by the conflicting interests of stakeholders. It was observed that the management of coastel port areas was subjected to a broader range of economical and social pressures. Awareness on environmental problems, such as chemical and sewage pollution, loss of rare natural habitats, was increased. Port areas were viewed as esturine environments hosting a delicate ecology. Analysis shows that the deepening of navigation channel provides benefits for navigation and environmental safety.
