Authority Either Lamarck or Blainville. The earliest-found usage is that of Lamarck (1818) and also Neave (Nomenclator Zoologicus) attributes the name to Lamarck. However, contemporary authors, attribute the genus name to Blainville (possibly 1818), but without giving the reference, and likewise Lamarck has a mention of Blainville. He wrote (translated) "This genus was established by M. Ocken under the name of heluo, which M. de Blainville changed to that of Erpobdella. We doubt that the species that are the subject of it are annelids. They obviously have a lot of relations with the planarians, and some of them may be really species of them." Mann (1952) incorrectly uses the preceding quote to give the authority as "de Blainville (in Lamarck, 1818.)". As yet a usage by Blainville of Erpobdella earlier than Lamarck (1818) has not yet been found, but it may exist. It might have been an informal French language usage as 'Erpobdelle'. Blainville by 1828 in vol 57 of the 'Dictionnaire' uses the same names as in Lamarck, who is mentioned but not cited. No authority name is given for Erpobdella. Blainville (1828) possibly was copying names from Lamarck (1818), but there is the (unlikely?) possibility the Erpobdella names on the Hirudinea plate of the Dictionnaire plates appeared earlier than Lamarck, 1818. The plate book is undated. [details]

Spelling Lamarck's (1818) spelling was "Erpobdella". Agassiz (1846) in his catalogue of genera suggested a changed spelling of "Herpobdella", and this was picked up and implemented by some authors, notably Blanchard (1894) when he named the family "Herpobdellidae". However, Mann (1952) comments: "The spelling of the word Erpobdella has long been a matter of controversy. The orthography here adopted is that originally used by de Blainville (in Lamarck, 1818). He used it in two subsequent works, so that there is no question of there being an error of transcription or typography, and so, according to the International Code, the original orthography must be preserved. Its alteration by Agassiz (1846) to Herpobdella is invalid." [details]
